In der Zwischenkriegszeit konnte er sich als Komponist, Pianist und Texter einen Namen im Bereich des Wiener Kabaretts machen (Literatur am Naschmarkt). 1938 musste er in die USA fliehen und arbeitete als Kompositionslehrer an einem amerikanischen College.
