Hans Gál

Brunn am Gebirge, 1890-1987, Edinburgh

Only few composers of his generation could count his number of successes. His opera “The Sacred Duck”maintained its place in the German repertoire from its premiere in 1923 to its removal by the Nazis in 1933 with performances in all German opera houses. He was equally successful with orchestral- and chamber music. His escape to Great Britain resulted in tragedy and internment. Only later, as one of the founders of the Edinburgh Festival and as a teacher on Edinburgh’s University could he rebuild his reputation.
