Vienna, 1902-1960, Lima
Buchwald studied piano with Richard Robert at Vienna’s New Conservatory before embarking on a career as conductor, eventually becoming the music director of the small municipal German Theater in Halberstadt. With Hitler’s rise to power, and no work available in Vienna, he immigrated on the advice of relatives to Santiago in Chile. He was soon invited to build up an orchestra in Peru and with its first concert in December 1938, the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional was founded. He remained music director of the ensemble until his death in 1960.
